Darling River Run – Wilcannia

Wilcannia was a chance to refill the water tanks, stock up on food and do some washing. I almost went into shock when I found out that the only two pubs in town were boarded up and hadn’t been open for years – and we’d drank the last bottle of wine the night before! Luckily the golf club sold takeaway – phew!

Speaking fo the golf club we never did see a golf course – just a dilapidated bowling green. Not sure they play much golf here.

Wilcannia has all of these beautiful old sandstone buildings but they all appear to be abandoned and boarded up. There was only one shop selling food and a small bag of groceries cost us $62!

We did a day trip from Wilcannia to White Cliffs – another opal field. White Cliffs was great. We went on a tour of an underground house – one of the owners was an artist whose sculptures adorned the place – stunning! The guide mentioned that the maximum temperature his house had ever got to was 25C and this was when it was pushing 50C outside. The minimum it had ever reached was 16C.

Next day it was off to Nelia Gaari – another station on the Darling River
