Darling River Run – Mungo National Park

After leaving Menindee we had an overnighter at Pooncarrie. Beautiful camping spot right beside the Darling River and a short drive into town for a meal at the pub. Good pub food and a nice friendly atmosphere. Our neighbours had been there for 10 weeks waiting out the Melbourne lockdown.

Next day we headed into Mungo National Park. We have been to Mungo before and were looking forward to a restful time. Beautiful scenery, fantastic history and of course the site of Mungo man and Mungo woman. Their remains date back 42,000 years and are the first evidence of human cremation.

Mungo is also famous for the ‘Walls of China’, the eroded edge of the ancient lakebed where ‘lunettes’ are formed. Most of this erosion has occurred since pastoralists and rabbits came to the area.

Our drive out was a bit worrying. There had been a small fall of rain the night before – maybe about 1-2 mm. The roads in the area are marked ‘do not drive when wet’ and I think the fines are $1,000 per wheel if you do. Anyway, it looked fine so we drove out passing a number of other vehicles along the way.

  2. …. were Mungo man and Mungo woman ever married ????

    1. There would have been a big age difference – about 14,000 years!

  3. I just love that shot of the Milky Way above the caravan !!!

    1. Thanks. I left a bit for my main tripod at home so I’ve had to use a small one that makes things much more difficult.
