We’ve always missed Carnarvon Gorge as we were either east or west of it so we were looking forward to our visit. We weren’t disappointed!

We stayed at Sandstone Park, just out of the Gorge, after recommendations from friends. Nice roomy camp with lovely views.

Our first day we walked as far as the rock art gallery and Ward’s Canyon. The rock art gallery had been in use by the Bidjara and the Karingbal for about 3,650 years but habitation in the Gorge goes back at least 19,500 years! Some excellent examples of stencilling. The gallery was the highlight of our visit.

When we returned we were surprised to see we’d walked 14 iPhone kilometres.

Second walk was to a canyon called ‘The Amphitheatre’. The last bit of the walk was up a number of steps, through a narrow canyon in the cliffs and into a large natural amphitheatre. Very spectacular and photos don’t do it justice.

Our next major stop was Lara Station Wetlands. They’re located about 30K south of Barcaldine. Camping spots are around a large lake with the water supplied to it from artesian water. The water comes out of the ground at about 45° and into a pool. It was very nice soaking in the hot artesian water!

The wetlands are a hotspot for birdlife in the area and we enjoyed our time walking around the lake taking photos of them. Sunsets and sunrise (yes, I did manage a sunrise!) are spectacular.

Definitely a place to return to!
