Wave Rock and Esperance

You can’t go to Western Australia without visiting Wave Rock. So that’s what we did. Judie couldn’t resist doing the surfing photo either! What surprised me was the dam on the side of it. Water from the rock is collected and used as part of the water supply for the town of Hyden.

A bit out of town was Mulka’s Cave. Aboriginal legend has Mulka as the son of a woman who fell in love with a man forbidden by law. He had crossed eyes so couldn’t aim a spear properly and ended up eating children. He lived in the cave and his handprints are much higher and larger than that of an ordinary man. Moral to the story – obey the law!

We stopped in Ravensthorpe and the wildflower festival was on with a massive display of local wildflowers in the community hall. Lots of craft work incorporating wildflowers as well.

Esperance was our last major destination in Western Australia before the long drive across the Nullarbor. We visited Duke of Orleans Bay and Wharton Beach. Beautiful white sands and lots of wildflowers. We stopped in at Lucky Bay Brewery on the way back into town and had a wood fired pizza and sampled some of their beers.

People say the drive across the Nullarbor is boring but we love it! We had three great camps along the way and there are plenty to chose from. Our last was at Bunda Cliffs (the third time we have camped here) and almost had the place to ourselves.

We are now in South Australia and looking forward to it – especially the Clare Rieslings!
