Darling River Run – Wentworth

The skies are brass and the plains are bare,
Death and ruin are everywhere –
And all that is left of the last year’s flood
Is a sickly stream on the grey-black mud;
The salt-springs bubble and the quagmires quiver;
And this is the dirge of the Darling River:

Henry Lawson – The Song Of The Darling River

And so we arrived in Wentworth and the end of our Darling River run. We have travelled over 800 Km on dirt roads ranging from good to terrible. We had a fantastic time and would gladly do this trip again. We were lucky with the weather as well. If we had done this trip last year it would have been a dust bowl with no water and dying fish. This year there was plenty of water in the river with wildflowers everywhere. If we had attempted this trip a fortnight earlier many of the roads would have been closed due to rain.

We’re camped now on the banks of the Murray River planning our next moves. Originally we had intended to follow the Murray to its source and then cut back through Victoria. Now we will follow the Murray upstream instead.
